gao jianfu is from panyu, guangzhou, he didn’t go to school when he was a boy for the poor family, worked in his uncle’s drugstore, his uncle like drawing, especially for the bamboo which is the enlighten to him. two years later in 1893, with the commend he study drawing to the julian who is a famous artist at that time for flower and birds. julian appreciated him for his diligence and let jianfu living with him for work and study. with the help from a classmate yizhuang wu who was in the chips, he made his home in wansong garden belonged to wu, it was a opportunity for him to study many painting collected by wu and made friends with some artists which bring him so many advantages for his future. in 1902, also with the help of wu, he studied in macao gezhi school (predecessor of lingnan university), studied with french bamberger mara for charcoal drawing, and back to guangzhou to be a traditional chinese painting teacher in guangzhou rensutang elementary school. during that time, he made the acquaintanceship with japanese painter yamamoto umetora，and with his recommendation takes office the guangdong and guangxi superior grade normal school to be the arts teacher. meantime his younger brother gao qifeng (1889~1933) has studied the drawing under gao jianfu instruction, and gradually has some improvement. in 1906, brothers gao travel to the japan successively to study the arts. and they will start merge west \ocean skill, light and shade transplants into the chinese traditional painting. during the two brothers studies in japan, they joined into the alliance association which leaded by sun yat-sen. in 1908 the brothers gao return to guangzhou follow orders, gao jianfu is continue as eight years alliance association guangdong branch society association president. in 1910, gao jianfu participated into an assassinates group, exploded the guangdong supervises li zhun. in 1911, he planned the assassinate guangzhou general feng shan, and he took part in the guangzhou revolt "march, 29 ". after the revolution of 1911, gao jianfu took the post of route army commander-in-chief; after guangzhou recovers to be the vice-chairman of "sea land regiment association"

even if in the important time of the revolution, gao brothers also didn’t give up painting. in 1910, the art exhibitions held in guangzhou arouse the warm interest of cultural circle. gao brothers get the prosperous reputation. after republic of china had been established gao brothers got the imbrues from guangdong military government to organizes "esthetic book hall" in shanghai, and published "truth pictorial" to demonstrated the lingnan painter's artistic style to the nation, started the form " the compromised chinese and foreign, merges the ancient and modern" for lingnan school of painting. in 1916 gao jianfu returns to homeland from japan to be the principal of guangdong industry college and gao qifeng to be the director for art and lithograph plates. from then on gao brothers devoted to the innovation of drawing and the artistic to train   art person. gao jianfu organized the “spring to rest” art academy, art college of south china, guangzhou art school, and also to be the traditional chinese painting professor in sun sat-sen university), art professor in nanjing central university, trained one group of painting heroes to be the second generation of lingnan school of painting. such as fang rending, huang shaoqiang, li xiongcai, guan shanyue, zhao shaoang and so on. gao brothers also went to southeast asia, european, americas and many countries to hold the art exhibition, the course many times to demonstrated and propagandize the chinese drawing art to the world.

another founder of lingnan school of painting named chen shuren (1883-1948) with nick name shao, and outside another name fisher in reed, from panyu, guangzhou. he is the student of famous painter ju lian. he joined in the democratic revolution when he was young. he participated in the alliance association in 1905. and in 1906, studied arts aboard in japan and is and engaged in the revolutionary activity. in 1912, he graduated in the japanese kyoto arts school. after repatriates, he worked in guangdong superior grade normal school, higher normal school as the arts professor. in early time he followed sun yat-sen to be engaged in the revolutionary work, to be the senior statesmen of kuomintang and successively work on kuomintang important post, the guangdong province civil administration department chief, national government secretary-general, executive committee of kuomintang central committee, national government consultant and so on. however, he always maintains the scholar, painter's quality and the style. he initiates the traditional chinese painting innovation, advocated to take naturally as the basic, pursued poetic sentiment, formed by "clear" and "new". he has thousands of works for he laid stress on sketch and has a high reputation on the world. some celebrated works collect overseas museum. his residence chu garden (shuqian road, dongshan district) is made to be the memorial hall for chen.

for commemorating, collection, exhibiting, displaying the works for lingnan school of painting, some guangzhou related department has constructed the memorial hall for it in 1991, and the hall is situated in the guangzhou arts institute campus which is designed by the famous lingnan architecture mo bozhi and he jingtang. the total building area of the hall is 4900 square meter. the main hall is four white constructions with the building area 3200 square meter. the foundation and first floor set up the collection department, research department, creation department and exhibition department separately. second and third floors are the exhibition halls; fourth floor is the history and basic exhibition of lingnan school of painting. two embossed towering trees are on the north and south wall at front of the main hall, to symbolize the lingnan school of painting be well established and vigorously developed.
